How long did it take you to complete the piece?

Took me about 3 days time.

What was your thought process in your creative concept of the final submission?

Initially I wanted to portray a huge group of freedom fighters led by a hero towards victory, but that changed when I realized the deadline was not when I thought it was. So in order to finish the submission in time, I had to simplify and work smart along the way. I tuned down the crowds and lowered down the level of details but still kept the original concept so I didn’t lose my direction.

Wooooo! Great work Kael!!! This is amazing! Splendid atmosphere, great colors, dynamism, energy... Really stunning!!!

What was the theme or atmosphere you were aiming for in your entry?

I’m trying to show anger and danger in a war of resistance, but at the same time trying to dissolve that with a sunrise that brings hope to the people. So it’s somewhat between the two.

How did the preview of the game inspire you or your entry?

The spirit of the resistance definitely made me wanna paint something for them, particularly because I’ve had similar feeling when the same thing happened in my country before. It’s not the same but they’re related somehow, so the feeling is strong!

How long did it take you to complete the piece?

I’m not sure around 8 long evenings, I think.

What was your thought process in your creative concept of the final submission?

It is hard to say. Mostly I work intuitively, which brings me few problems sometimes in my later work. When I conquer my excitement and daydreaming, I force myself to think about composition, colors etc. I start reading about the topic of my painting and researching good photos references to understand what I have to paint. When I feel I know enough I ask myself: what would I do in this situation in the middle of the revolution? What would I feel? What can I put on? etc. When I deal with it, I start sketching and painting and voilà ! (;

Amazing work, I love how you created depth of field.

Why did you decide to participate?

I wanted to try drawing in a military theme and with all feelings and talk around it. I like challenging myself and forcing myself to think about my life and different situations and everything while drawing. And the Homefront contest was a great opportunity for me to do it.

Is there any meaning or message behind your work?

I wanted to paint a strong woman who defends what is the most important for her freedom, tradition and life.

This is freakin great!! Awesome work on the depth of field with the foreground elements. Also love the small details in her ripped jeans and in her tattoo. Great job!

How long did it take you to complete the piece?

I spent 6 days on this image, 2 days searching for the references and the sketching process and 4 days for painting.

Lots of entry are in the same styles of this one. Same colours, number of fighters, etc. And it is my favorite of all. Really good job with the perspective, the originality of the shield looks awesome. the fire and warm effect is really good. we can feel the warm. And at last it looks really good on a board for the video game. 1 negative point: There is 2 korea flag, 1 would have been alright, in my opinion. there is things you need to repeat but that was not part of it. Really good job overall. wondering how much time you put in it?

What was your thought process in your creative concept of the final submission?

Since the game is set in a real place, I searched a lot of reference images like riot pictures and also information about Philadelphia. Then I came up with 3 sketches. First I wanted to paint a fighting scene but I thought it’s too violent and can’t show much portrait. So I chose the last sketch which shows 3 men posing with guns. It’s too simple compared to the fighting scene that is full of dynamic action, so I have to concentrate on the details of the characters to make my image outstanding. For painting, I started with line art and then added base colour. I didn’t add much details on this process, just only a rough figure. When I was okay with the pose and colour, I rendered it and added the details later. I created new layers for adding the props like gun and bags and when it looked okay I merged it together. I used a lot of layers to separate the objects in the image like the characters, the background etc. which is useful when I want to adjust the composition.

I’m originally from Southwest Philly and this made my day, :happybounce: great job and congrats for being first place! Clap

What are some ways this piece has helped improve your work?

I watched a video on youtube about how to make a good composition and I tried it on this image. For this image, I wanted the main character’s face to be a focal point so I used a guide line to guide viewers. It’s a line which is hidden in the image, please take a look at the direction of the fallen ship, the line of baluster row, the shape of the gun on the blue cap man and also the shape of the shield. All have guide lines that lead the viewers to the face of the main character. I’m not sure if it works or not? But it was fun to try.

How did the preview of the game inspire you or your entry?

When I watched the preview, one thing that really inspired me is a weapon in the game: a homemade gun which use different gun parts, bombing with remote control car. It seems like in this game you can use everything around you to fight the war. That’s where the idea of the shield on the main character came from.

How long did it take you to complete the piece?

Full creation of this work took about 12-15 hours.

What was your thought process in your creative concept of the final submission?

I know that most of the artists selected dynamic scenes for the competitions, but I decided to do my work quieter. I wanted to to draw the sad people who were tortured by the war, but at the same time keep them strong and harsh. I wanted to show the soldiers in between battles.

this is just fantastic

Why did you decide to participate?

I draw mostly fantasy stories and it was a great opportunity to practice drawing something that I usually don’t draw.

What are some ways this piece has helped improve your work?

This picture was very helpful in developing my skills. I never painted such works and it was a new and interesting experience. And I also worked on drawing people. I used a photo of myself in the right positions, so that people in the picture look realistic.
